Harder Kulm

At the Harder Kulm above Interlaken, you will find nostalgia, culinary delights and a wonderful panorama in one perfect package. The restaurant on the Hardergrat ridge looks like a castle straight out of a fairytale. A half-timbered building with a red-tiled roof and a turret that resembles a fir tree.

Harder Kulm

An excursion to the top of Interlaken’s local mountain is possible at any time of the day and a great option for a spur-of-the-moment outing. The journey in the red funicular railway takes just 10 minutes. The track runs through the forest and alongside the deer park. Taken into service in 1908, the railway overcomes gradients of up to 64 degrees. At 1322 m.a.s.l., you will be greeted by the Harder Kulm Restaurant with its spacious sun terrace. The menu includes something for everyone: from the signature Harder Breakfast to Swiss favourites such as potato rösti and delicious desserts.

A key attraction on the Harder is the airy “Two-Lake-Footbridge” lookout platform. As the name implies, the views from here stretch from Lake Brienz in the east, across the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks to Lake Thun in the west. The glazed section at the front of the platform ensures thrilling views into the depths.

If you feel like some active recreation after a long seminar or annual meeting, the summit can be reached on foot in around two hours. A well maintained hiking trail ascends to the top through the forest and deer park. But there is no need to climb 700 altitude metres in order to stretch your legs. A number of short and longer circular trails start and end at the restaurant. And while you are exploring, you might even come across the “Hardermannli”, whose stony countenance is carved into the Harder cliff face.

It is not entirely clear how the Hardermannli got there. Village lore has it that a monk – an unsavoury character and villain of the highest order – lived in Interlaken in the early 16th century. He is said to have preyed on a young girl while she was gathering firewood in the Harder forest. She fled, leaping from the high cliff to her death, whereupon the heavenly judge himself turned the monk into stone on the spot.
